While I was out in New York I made a stop in Harlem to link up with my brother No Suh Foster. If you've been following my work for some years then you know No Suh and I have done a lot of work together. He recently made the big move to Harlem from Mobile about a month ago. While in Harlem we walked to the historic Rucker Park Playground where many famous basketball players have played. Stopped by a local Caribbean Jerk Restaurant where I had the jerk salmon which was well worth the 20 minute wait. We then walked down 20 blocks to the Apollo Theater capturing everything in sight. I didn't get to hit all the spots I wanted to in Harlem, but that makes for a good reason to visit again as soon as possible.
NYC: ONE WORLD.
Where do I start? New York was amazing. It was everything what I expected and more. From the food to the various cultures to the rats on the subway lol. I tried to cover as much ground as I possibly could in 4 days, but I feel like I barley scratched the surface even though I made it to the Midtown, Time Square, Queens, Brooklyn, and Harlem. Definitely need to make another trip in the summer and stay for a week or so.
Day one I went to the top of the One World Trade Center which is the sixth tallest building in the world and the tallest in the western hemisphere. The views of New York from there were priceless. I ended photographing until the sunset and captured some night shots of the city. It was definitely worth that 104 story journey we took in the elevator to the top. Really felt like I was on top of the world.
ESSENTIALS: NEW YORK
I'm headed to New York tomorrow morning for the first time. Excited to explore the city for a few days. It wouldn't be right if I went without my camo and wheat Timbs lol. Follow my instagram [@j.milhouse] and snapchat [@milhovse] for live updates.
"The Seen" Detroit.
"The Seen" is a collective of creative individuals that all share a love for fashion and style. A few weeks ago Nelson Sanders got a few of us together to brainstorm on how we would present this movement to the world. So this past weekend we all decided together and meet each other. Hayden took photos while I got video footage of the meet-up. The vibe was cool and it was good connecting with like-minded people. We discussed creative ideas and ways we can shine light on Detroit's fashion scene and grow this movement. This is the beginning of the many more meet-ups to come. Check the video I shot below with music by Louis "BO404" Jackson. I appreciate Nelson for getting us all together and excited about the future for "The Seen"
Project 366: JANUARY.
If you've been following my instagram account then you've probably been keeping up with my photos for my Project 366 journey. Below are all the photos for the month of January. One month down!
FLINT, USA
This past weekend I went up to Flint, Michigan to attend my cousin's funeral. Most of my family on my dad's side is from Flint, so growing up I would visit there often. Funerals always evoke different emotions out of me. I'm sad about losing a loved one, but also happy that I get to be with family I don't see on the regular. After the funeral my dad drove me to his house where he grew up as a child. My dad and my Uncle Kenny had plenty of stories to tell about the people and events that went on in their neighborhood. I'm always interested in hearing my dad's stories about growing up in Flint with 8 brothers and sisters, and even more half siblings and cousins. Seems like there was so much to do and everybody looked out for one another.
Flint recently has been in the national news because of the contaminated water that people of the city have been drinking and bathing in since 2014. This is due to State officials deciding to switch from the Detroit water supply to Flint River to save on costs. Unfortunately Flint's water pipes contained high levels of lead and has been effecting the people, something Michigan's Governor Snyder was made aware of in the past but did nothing. While driving around the city I saw cars lined up at a Fire Station where people were picking up cases of bottled water and loading them in their vehicles. I'm glad this crisis is getting national attention but it's sad to know it takes people dying or getting really sick for this issue to gain traction.
My time up there was short but I enjoyed seeing my aunts, uncles, and cousins. Being able to sit down a catch up and make jokes with my family is something I cherish. If you are ever in Flint or meet someone from there with the last name Milhouse nine times out of ten they are kin.
In The Studio: Cheryl & Jewell
Jewell contacted me about a month ago asking if I could take photos for her mom's birthday. Of course I accepted. I'm honored that Jewell reached out to me to capture these classic moments of her and her mom. I had a great time shooting these two.
St. Agnes.
A couple weeks ago I shot a fashion show campaign in the historic St. Agnes Catholic Church. For years its been a popular destination for photographers, but it was my first time ever being in there. Built in 1924 St. Agnes served the catholic community until 1989, and also had a school attached to it. It eventually closed in 2006. Walking into the structure it's easy to tell what a massive church it once was. We shot for two hours, using ever inch and corner of the church. It was the perfect backdrop for the video I was shooting. Not sure the next time I'll be back, but I'm glad I was able to capture some epic images in there.
30 Americans.
Earlier today I went to the DIA to check out the much talked about 30 Americans exhibit. The exhibit features contemporary artwork from 30 African American artists. It was inspiring to see artwork of some of the artists I've been following for years. I was especially excited to see Kehinde Wiley and Basquiat's work up close in person. I've been following Wiley's work for about 4 years now, ever since my grandparents gave me a book on his work for my birthday. His paintings are massive and really captivate the room. Another one that stood out was a piece entitled "Duck Duck Noose." When I got to the art work there was a crowd surrounding the powerful piece. The exhibition is up until tomorrow so I highly suggest that you check it out if you can. Who knows maybe next time my work will be featured...
In The Studio: Esmat Ishag-Osman
Last week my brother Esmat came through the studio. He is currently working on his Ph.D at Wayne State University and needed some professional shots as well as some stylish shots. We knocked out the shoot in about an hour. The brown coat Esmat is wearing in the photos was his granddad's which he brought back from Ghana. It worked really well in contrast to the black backdrop. Gave it that GQ feel haha. Me and Esmat are also working on a dance video that should be out in a couple months, so be on the look out for that.
